Objectives
The course aims to provide students with competence in understanding and using basic Malay, that is, to enable students to use Malay language with regard to the four language skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking - at the basic level.The emphasis is on its practical use within a limited range of situations at the level of everyday communication. It aims to enable students to express themselves on things close to themselves using simple expressions. The content progresses from the easier aspects of the language to the more difficult ones. The content covers aspects of linguistics such as phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. The content takes into consideration lexicogrammar which will enable students to learn through identifying patterns and characteristics. The content of this course is also designed to introduce some aspects of Malay sosial, cultural and religious practices through the use of texts and exercises in the course matarials.

HMM2/LM9002 - Malay Language Level 2
Pre-requisite: HMM1 or Placement Test

Objectives
The course is a progression from Malay Language Level 1. It aims primarily to provide students with an enhanced knowledge of Malay (oral and written) at the post-basic level in order to attain a functional competency in the language for formal and practical communication such as expressing opinions in a discussion. The content covers enhanced aspects of Malay linguistics and lexicogrammar. This intermediate level course also seeks to enable students to acquire a higher competence in communication and to deepen their understanding of some Malay sosial, cultural and religious practices through the use of authentic materials.

The course covers:

Developing enhanced competence in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing by understanding the workings of the language as follows:
- Enhanced morphological and syntactical aspects of lexicogrammar of Malay language.
- Enhanced pragmatic aspects of Malay language such as making a statement, asking a question, giving a command and handling reported speech.
- Enhanced semantic aspect of Malay language such as synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, polysemy and numeral classifiers.
- Engaging in language tasks as follows:
- Making a presentation and answering questions
- Reading comprehension
- Writing a composition
- Translation
- Understanding graphic stimulus
- Discussing an issue
